The Pete Lyons Award
Automotive journalist Pete Lyons chronicled the original drives of many of these cars and has expressed eloquently his special feelings for these cars and their history.
At the 2001 Monterey Historics, James King introduced Pete Lyons to the HGP drivers and explained the creation of the Pete Lyons Cup.
Pete's selection process is totally subjective and personal. He spoke of the memories evoked by the Historic Grand Prix cars as they roared past over the weekend, mentioning many cars specifically for their history, preparation, and performance.
At the end of the day, two cars got the nod -- the Team Tyrrell entries once driven to glory by Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert.
The current Team Tyrrell Drivers John Dimmer and John Delane were thrilled by the award and gleefully accepted a specially recreated silver bowl, with photographic documentation of similar ceremonies.
Rebecca Hale-Tweedie, HGP principal, filled the cup with the Veuve Clicquot, and hijinks ensued...
Thanks, Pete.
